Donkeykong memes7/25/2023 The game came with an expansion pack and banana themed controller. The game featured gameplay similar to other platformers of the time like Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day with a heavy emphasis on collecting items and five different playable characters. In 1999, Donkey Kong Country got its first sequel for a new system with Donkey Kong 64 on the Nintendo 64. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble sold 4.37 million and 2.89 million copies, respectively, proving the success of the franchise. Two sequels were made for the system both utilizing the 3D technology that the first game put in place. The game was revolutionary as it was one of the first video games ever to use pre-rendered 3D graphics. It went on to become the second best selling game for the console with Super Mario World as the first. If Nintendo wanted to cement Donkey Kong's status as a character, he needed to be the protagonist of his own game…ĭonkey Kong Country was first released in North America on November 21st 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Ironically, by that point, the original Donkey Kong was looked at as more of a Mario game than a Donkey Kong game. However, the most notable spin-off was Super Mario Brothers starring a renamed Jumpman. The game was a huge hit for Nintendo and spawned quite a few spin-offs and sequels such as Donkey Kong Jr. The game play was simple: you play as a small italian man named "Jumpman" and have to climb scaffolding (jumping over barrels and avoiding fireballs in the process) to rescue your girlfriend, Pauline, from the evil clutches of Donkey Kong. I think there's another layer to the HE meme, namely that the DK Rap never refers to the characters by name, always using "HE" (or "SHE", in Tiny's case).Donkey Kong made his first appearance in the arcade game of the same name in 1981. I think the further Donkey Kong stays away from that direction, the better. Yeah, he was briefly 90s cool back during DK64, but you know what else was 90s cool? Sonic the christing Hedgehog. I don't think anyone knew what Rare was doing when they made THAT beautiful piece.ĭonkey Kong has never been a serious character, he's not like Mario who has literally no personality besides "happy or joyful", and he's not as serious as Link in a lot of the earlier games. But the fucking DK Rap is just really funny, and I'm glad its ridiculousness resurged into shitty meme form. Out of all of them, I'd probably say HE is the most annoying. There's also some cool variations, including Cranky Kong"s "fucking casuals". Like the first time I saw "Feature Length", I might've lost a side. It's not pointing and going "geez, get a load of how corny these lyrics are" for the hundredth time.Ĭ'mon guys, y'all are so paranoid that DK's going to be messed up that we're hating on the memes now?Įxpand Dong images are really funny, really cropping what's fun about the character and adding a bit of silly perversion. It's not the same type of surface-level observation I'm used to seeing when the song comes up. By comparison, Expand Dong was just so off the wall, and there are so many little things about it that amuse me in addition to the initial shock factor.Īs for HE, I can understand why someone who's tired of the DK Rap getting referenced all the time would write it off at first glance, but it feels different to me from all the usual quoting. But taken on its own, it's just the character's name with the vowel sounds mixed up. Someone not knowing fuck about a topic and missing a trivia question about it is pretty funny, and messing with the spelling added just the right touch of absurdity to really set it over the edge. I don't think the joke itself is lazy, in its original context. Dankey Kang is my least favorite, though still pretty funny, but it's kind of hard to put into words exactly why. Of course, the way the question is phrased, I can still vote. It helps that I still find all of them genuinely amusing in their own rights. I for one have fully embraced these means of spreading my love for the franchise to outsiders.
